Reflections on Senior Life: Keeping the Faith

The idiom ‘time flies’ means more to me now. After our 50th and 55th class reunions, I think about how much we’ve changed since we were in our teens. So, how are you? Has ‘senior’ taken on a different meaning for you since high school? If so, consider yourself fortunate. Enjoy this new ‘senior’ perspective. Finding it easier to enjoy than not? Then, you’ve probably stockpiled yourself with a good dose of ‘keeping the faith’ over the years.

We’ve all faced ups and downs since 1969. We, no doubt, can share many stories filled with laughter and tears. Life experience can teach us that moving beyond the past, especially the hurt, can be healing. Living in the moment allows us to cherish old friendships while creating new memories. For me, the idea of living in the moment lends itself well to ‘keeping the faith’.

I often think about my teenage years and the friendships I formed. Each proved to be a great influence on who I am today. They had a significant effect on my character, development, and behavior. They instilled in me a sense of resilience and the importance of friendship, community, and support.

As Billy Joel wrote…

“You can get just so much from a good thing
You can linger too long in your dreams
Say goodbye to the oldies but goodies
‘Cause the good ole days weren’t always good
And tomorrow ain’t as bad as it seems…”

How about you? Have you been keeping the faith? What moments have shaped your journey toward these golden years?

  1. Keeping the Faith ?! Absolutely !!! AFTER ….. Dixie joined USAF, completed two degrees (Criminal Justice & Corrections), Married, children …… retired from USAF. But …. the whole time including while at Dixie I was a Born Again Christian and Jesus Christ was then and IS now , My World.

So yes, you could say I have been Keeping the Faith. I hope U know the LORD in a personal relationship, knowing HIM as Lord and Savior. God has been good to me. Thank You for answering my message.

I spent 3.5 years at Dixie and my mother moved to OHIO in the middle of my Senior year. Of course I had to go and I graduated at a High School in Bellefontaine , OH

Because of my three + years at Dixie, I received one day about two years later a HS Diploma from Dixie. I also received a Diploma from the HS in Ohio. Have 2 High School Diploma’s LOL.

I am in excellent health, no meds , never been in a hospital, never had a stitch, or broken bone never took ANY shots since High School to the present. No high blood pressure…….do marathons, still can lift my weight over my head (205 lbs). And can still run the 100 yd dash ……. 12.5 seconds. Eat Clean …… no red meats.

George Burns and Gary Schuler and Randy McGinnis and Randy Shively were friends while at Dixie. I play Football …… ” Go Rebels “

Currently living across the bay, Tampa / Temple Terrace

    Thanks for the Chat ……

    1. Hello again! You’re very welcome! Thanks so much for the quick response to my first post in quite some time. It definitely sounds like keeping the faith has served you well! You’ve accomplished much since our days at Dixie. Hoping your response will encourage others, whether from Dixie or just baby boomers to help create an interactive community here by sharing experiences of their own. Thanks again!

  2. I graduated in 1969 but was a fan of Dixie’s teams since the second grade as I lived nearby and had friends with older brothers who participated on its football and basketball teams. It was a great time to grow up in Florida, before the massive growth and development. I worked at McDonalds throughout high school and did various jobs while going to night school at SPJC and USF. In my teenage years and early 20s I participated in many water related activities, including scuba diving, surfing and boating. Now retired from a banking career, my joy comes from spending time with family, particularly my grandchildren. I have two tennis courts at my condo and sponsor three days of tennis weekly for a dozen friends. I am grateful for all the blessings throughout my life and feel very unworthy.
